i do meat on sale but i normally get it if it is at least 3 to 5 days from expiring. i also smell it before i buy it, sometimes if it is bad it will smell through the package and i also look at the meat. if the color looks too off, i don’t buy it.

i regularly buy discounted beef, never pork or chicken…but i have a couple of “rules”: if color is bad, or package is not perfectly sealed~I don’t buy.

this one of the big ways we save on our grocery bill! esp good considering how much we love really nice steaks (wh we are having tomorrow night btw!!)

Just a tip: Not all stores will do this, but it never hurts to ask.. If you see meat that is about to expire you can always ask the butcher or manager to discount it as its about to expire. I used to live by an Albertsons that would do it all the time for me. If I saw it was ready to expire (like the next day) I would ask them to mark it down for me. 9 out of 10 times they would! They are going to mark it down the next day anyway!
I have gotten many a wonderful Filet Mignon steaks for dirt cheap!

I have bought quick-sell meats and I freeze immediately. I have only bought chicken once like this however and had the same problem your friend had. I threw the meat away, but happened to mention it to the butcher at my kroger. She
had me bring in the wrapper and credited me that amount. She stated that it should not have been bad when I went to serve it that night.

I do buy quick-sell meat on occasion. I usually put all meat in the freezer immediately (unless I’m cooking it that night). I’ve thrown out too much $$ due to change in plans. I don’t take any chances now.

I’ll buy it if it’s about the expire and it IMMEDIATELY goes into my deep freeze. I’ve never had a problem. And as soon as I defrost it, it gets used that day.

I would never buy it and keep it in my fridge…I think discounted, quick-sell meat is meant to be used immediately or frozen.

I do buy beef, steak or ground meat, if it’s on quick sale and freeze immediately. I’ve never had any problems.

I’ve never bought chicken but if I bought it, even on quick sale, and it smelled bad and it was before the expiration, I’d take it back.

I don’t purchase any meat of chicken that’s about to expire. That is to say to stick it in my freezer.

Now if I’m looking for something for dinner that night and it expires in a few days, then I might purchase it and cook it right away. lol

I don’t buy meat that is about to expire just because I am squeamish about my meat. However I do buy it when it is just on a store sale. I have returned bad meat to the store before without a problem. I’ve also returned sour milk as long as it is before or at the expiration date.
