The Home Depot is giving away a $50 gift card to give away to one of our very blessed readers!

Here are five helpful tips they shared with us to save on energy costs!

1.        Regularly maintain your furnace and water heater . Regular maintenance on your furnace and water heater will increase energy efficiency in your home. By combining proper equipment maintenance and upgrades with appropriate insulation, air sealing, and thermostat settings, you can cut your energy use for heating and cooling, and reduce environmental emissions, from 20 percent to 50 percent. Regular maintenance will help make these investments in your home last longer and be more energy efficient.
2.        Install a programmable thermostat . You can save up to $180 a year by installing a programmable thermostat that controls the temperature of your home while you’re at work or asleep.
3.        Seal your home from heat and cold . Allowing air to escape through gaps and cracks is like throwing your money away. By sealing your home like caulk, sealant and weather-stripping, you can save up to 20 percent on heating and cooling costs.
4.        Install insulation . According to the Department of Energy, the leading cause of energy waste in the home is inadequate insulation and air leakage. Homeowners typically can reduce heating and cooling costs by up to 20 percent by sealing their homes and adding insulation in attics, floors over crawl spaces and accessible basement rim joists.
5.        Update your windows . ENERGY STAR-qualified windows can reduce your energy costs by $126-$465 per year when replacing single-pane windows or $27-$111 a year when replacing double-pane, clear glass windows. For a quick fix, add heat control window film to your windows and save up to 50 percent on your cooling costs.
If you would like to enter for a chance to win the $50 gift card, go to The Home Depot’s podcast site. Choose your favorite money saving tip. Come back here and leave a comment on this post letting us know the tip you chose. This giveaway will end Sunday, November 23rd at midnight and the winner will be announced on Monday!

The tip I chose is the one we chose in real life. The programmable thermostat. About two years ago we were given a gift card for a home improvement store for Christmas. While browsing around we found the programmable thermostats and they are wonderful. It dips down at night while we are all snug in our beds and heats up shortly before we get up in the mornings. We also have it dip back down (or up) while we are at work and school. I cannot praise it enough.

My favorite is the storm doors. My mother has these on her house and she saves money on her energy bill. She sets her thermostat lower in the winter and doesn’t feel as cold because of the sun.

We are installing a storm door in two weeks just because of hers.

Thanks Home Depot for the giveaway.

I really need to go caulk all the cracks in my house this week. I have an older house with cracks and I definitely know I can save more energy and money if I do this. I also am going to pick up CFL bulbs and try them out!

  49. We have recently (within last week) added an additional layer of insulation to our attic and cellar joists, as well as purchased CFL lights based on information that we learned from Home Depot! Not only that, but our purchases were made directly from Home Depot!
I think if it were up to my Husband, he would move into Home Depot.
I found the other information very useful as well and it helps me to plan out my next item to tackle.

  50. Jennifer Irving

  69. Stephanie

What a great idea! As I have yet to enter the world of home-ownership, I felt that several of the options (including furnace & water heater maintenance) were logical, but out of regular maintenance requests in my complex!
Thus, my favorite tip is about using the ceiling fan! Just flipping a switch to make the ceiling fan more productive year round: how easy is that??!

  100. Denise
    20 Nov 08

Well, my very smart hubby has practiced energy saving techniques for years! We have the ceiling fan thing going on, our house faces south for great sun in winter and the eaves are just the right dimensions to shade in summer. We have great insulation value built from the start and now we even have new solar panels…very exciting, but also why I could use a $50 Home Depot card! So, I’ll choose the caulking because wood moves and gaps erupt from time to time.

Thanks! Hope you win the great Walmart card!

  101. Rhonda
    20 Nov 08

My favorite tip was Cooling & Heating Your Home with Ceiling Fans. We actually just installed a ceiling fan from Home Depot in my daughter’s room. She’ll be home from college for Thanksgiving and will see it then! She likes to have a fan runnning year-round in her bedroom . It was easy to install. (If you get stuck on something, check the troubleshooting section that’s probably at the back of the instruction manual and of course, read the instructions first. ) If we can do it, anyone can do it! Home Depot had a great selection of ceiling fans at affordable prices and a sales associate in their fan department was extremely helpful. She spent a ton of time with us, answering our questions and giving us suggestions.

Ceiling fans are key in our house. They really help keep the energy costs down since we can keep the thermostat a few degrees cooler or warmer with them on.

What a great idea! I love to save Money!

I liked hearing about the ceiling fans because my husband and I have been arguing about that topic for quite a long time.

    21 Nov 08

We have a programmable thermostat and so we have it set to drop during the day (and at night). You’d be amazed how much you can save that way!! We’re also pretty anal about turning off lights and not wasting water (i.e. letting the water run to rinse dishes, etc.). There are so many “easy” ways to save money…you just have to make it part of your “routine”!!

I like the idea of a programmable thermostat!! :-) Sounds like it would be a great money saver.

I’m so torn.. All of these options are something we need to do in our house. But, the one we need to focus on first is the CFL light bulbs.

I love the home depot. I have winterized my home there by buying my new hot water heater, sealing around my windows and putting in a programmable thermostat to help me lower some bills. I love the fact that home depot gives you these suggestions and when you go into the store- they help you find the stuff and explain how to do it. If I win it is going to make my christmas:)

I liked the ceiling fan podcast. I’ve been wanting a ceiling fan in our dining room and this just gave me another reason to convince my husband that it’s a good idea.

Programmable thermostats – that was one of the first things we changed when we moved into our house. It keeps the house cooler at night when we are snuggled under blankets – set it and forget it!

My husband installed a programmable thermostat…which is great for both summer and winter weather.
In the summer he sets it so that the air doesn’t kick on till it’s either 85 degrees inside or 5pm…that way we aren’t cooling a house we aren’t in.
In the winter he sets it to just not kick on till it’s colder than 60 degrees inside.
It’s nice to be able to walk in from a scorching day outside to cool air inside…or from a frigid day outside to toasty warmth inside…yet we save money by using the thermostat. It’s a win-win situation!!
We also use CFL’s for about half of our lights.

The best comment for me was either the storm doors (mine is a little weather and the screen is ripped and the panel isn’t so good), replacing the windows definately thinking about doing this in the babies rooms, or the programmable thermostat another one is to move our thermostat because it is right by the front door so ever time the door is opened or closed… you get the idea.
Sounds like I have some work to do!

    Thanks for the awesome giveaway!
    Happy Thanksgiving!

I check my doors and windows every year to see if they need new weather strips. Last year I also purchased energy efficient Christmas lights for the outside and the tree. I put all X-Mas lights on a timer so they are not on all night and day.

  167. I like the tip about using cieling fans in the winter.

  168. Laura
    21 Nov 08

Use dimming feature for lights (my husband installed ours and it wasn’t difficult!), and use energy star light bulbs. These 2 things are so easy to do, and you are saving BIG! Thanks for the great giveaway.

The programmable thermostat would help. We’ve already done the CFLS, but one piece of advice: don’t put them in lamps children may knock over. It’s already happened here, and they have a small amount of mercury in them.

We already have CFLs, so I am going to pick dimming the lights. I am incredibly guilty of leaving them on, so if I could manage to at least dim them to the bare minium, that should be a great help when we are all trying to save that little extra bit. Thanks for posting.

Weatherstripping!! I know we have some gaps by our windows and especially by our French doors. Now if I can just get my husband to do it… or learn how myself.

  208. Amy

I cover the in-wall air conditioners from the inside all the way to the molding. Covering them from outside just doesn’t do it. The cold air doesn’t seep in at all doing it this way.

Ceiling fans. I love my ceiling fans. I don’t think I could afford climate control (especially in Texas in the summer) without them. And I also love my programmable thermostat, although I wish it had the ability to program seven days for a two week cycle (instead of just week days and weekends). That would suit my life better. Maybe if I win the gift card, I’ll upgrade. :)

My favorite tip was to sealing your home from Heat and Cold. We actually did this last week. Our bedroom was freezing cold and we had to run mini portable heater in addition to the central heating to keep us warm. We then sealed our windows and we could actually notice the difference almost immediately. And, yes it is saving us a lot of money and we won’t have keep the heater running. Thanks for the awesome giveway and giving a chance to enter the giveaway.
