One of the biggest questions I get asked is, how can I work from home? Here are a few ideas I have thrown together for you.

1. Start a blog! You never know where you might end up!

2. Sell a handmade craft or invention! You can start an online store or sell it on Ebay! (I heart Ebay!)
Find the Perfect Gift on eBay!

3. Participate in Research Studies and surveys:

Cash Crate

Panda Research
4. Tutor in your area of expertise!

5. Train to become a professional. From a lactation consultant to a personal trainer… there is a demand for jobs you can work part time!

6. Start an in-home daycare. If you love kids, this may be for you!

7. Be A Mystery Shopper! Use the MSPA to search for companies to work for. Note: Never pay to sign up to work for a company. It should be 100% free to sign up!

8. Add any more ideas in the comments section!

Make sure you check out all the new Target deals here!

I have another one…be a Virtual Assistant! That’s what I’ve done for 6 years. I can choose my own clients, do what I enjoy, and have time for my family. www.ivaa and www.iavoa are both excellent resources.

A virtual assistant is a small business owner who assists other small companies, real estate agents, lawyers, speakers, etc with their day to day administrative needs. I have worked as a real estate virtual assistant, primarily focusing on listing coordination, branding, website management, client touch and more.

I just signed up at 5 survey places. So far most of the surveys offered have been for sweepstakes but the article I read on it said you had to keep looking around to find the ones that pay well.

  6. Interesting tips. Have you ever done the mystery shopping thing? I have heard that it is riddled with fraud and you have to be really careful with who you are dealing with. Curious to hear from anyone who has done this sucessfullly.

I love your site, Thanks for all your wonderful tips!! But I wanted to post a warning about the cash crate surveys. Be leary of giving out your phone number. I did a few surveys, I haven’t been paid yet, but yesterday on my phone bill I had a charge from IDL Teleservices for $21.15. They are a third party billing company and charged my phone bill out of nowhere. I had no idea companys could do this. I never gave out my ss# or my credit card when I filled out surveys so I figured I was safe. I immediately called my phone company and put a third party block on my phone and luckily they are going to recover the charges from IDL. But I have been reading all over the internet about people who are not so lucky. Please beware!!!

Start a home-based business! Direct sales has come a long way and is a classy and lucrative way to do business. Do your research and choose well. I have been in Arbonne for 2 years and it has been one of the biggest blessings to my family in so many, and very far-reaching, ways. It is service-oriented and so if you want to make a difference one person at a time (starting with your family!), it’s great! In this economy, this business booms! Plus, you can’t beat the quality. I call my business, R&R, rest and recovery, because I love my family and would otherwise not give enough time for myself to be all that I need for them. It is work, but I love it!!!

I work from home doing medical transcription. I have been doing it for 6 years now. I have a 5 year old that just started kindergarten today and an almost 2 year old. The job allows me a pretty flexible schedule since I don’t have to be tied to my desk from 8 to 5. As long as I get my work done within each 24 hour day I can pretty much set my own hours. Some people take the At Home Professions course but I went to my local community college and took evening courses as I was still working full time outside the home at that time. So if you are interested in doing that from home, check with your local continuing education courses in your community to see what they have to offer.

I’ve been working from home doing general transcription for three-plus years. You don’t need any formal training to get into the industry, and it’s very flexible. I blog about getting started along with two friends at http://www.transcriptiontalk.com, and we also just completed an ebook on breaking into the industry at http://www.generaltranscription101.com.

I work from home selling Mary Kay and really enjoy it. I meet a lot of new friends! You don’t need any formal training. It only costs $100 to start, that’s all! I make 50% of what I sell, I make my own schedule. And I get to spend the time I want with my family.

The Cosmetic industry is a very profitable industry during this time of uncertainty. In fact, the cosmetics industry was profitable during the great depression too. - Because women do not want to go without their lipstick, moisturizer and mascara! Plus I get my skin care and cosmetics for half off!

If you want to find a company where faith, ethics and morals still matter, Mary Kay is that company. Plus we were just featured on Good Morning America as a legitimate and profitable home-based business. Email me if you would like more information: withmarykay@gmail.com

Regarding “Work from home” ideas - if you know of local advertising sales offices, they are always looking for telemarketers. Medical recruiting is a HUGE home-based business. Manufacturers representatives are constantly on the road and are always looking for additional admin help. Check out http://www.best10workathome.org/

Or, if you are a writer, start your own newsletter, sell your own advertising and start your own distribution!!

I worked at home doing ebay when my mom was down sick with cancer.I would go to garage sales and buy good usable items & collectibles so that I could be self supportive.I even became a power seller and it paid all my bills.I would look at past auction to see how that item was selling.
